Hon. Festus Terer is a Senior Resident Magistrate currently stationed at Milimani Family Court, Nairobi. He holds an LL.B. Degree from Moi University and a Post Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. He previously worked at the Children’s Court, Nairobi, between the years 2019 and 2024.
He is an active member of the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) and a Board member, Tindiret Technical and Vocational College located in Nandi County. He is also the current Board Chairman of Chalan Foundation.
During his stint at Milimni Children’s Court, Festus co-introduced and incorporated a concept known as Art and Play Therapy in the administration of juvenile justice.
Barely seven months after joining the Judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) appointed him as the Deputy Chairman, Co-operative Tribunal. He served at the Tribunal for a period of one year before being redeployed back to the Children’s court.
His excellence in service delivery saw the Tribunal being ranked the best in the country in 2021.
His remarkable performance at the Children’s court saw it being ranked as the best performing children’s court in the country in the year 2021.
That same year (2021), the Law Society of Kenya, under its banner, the Nairobi Legal Awards, recognized his sterling performance at the Children’s court by nominating him for its annual prestigious awards.
In the year 2022, Festus became the youngest JSC panelist to Chair one of the Panels interviewing more than 24,000 Applicants for the position of Court Assistant.
In the year 2023, the Business Daily newspaper recognized his exceptional performance in the Administration of Justice by awarding him with its coveted Top 40 under 40.
Upon joining the Family Court last year (2024), his excellence in service delivery saw the court being ranked as the best performing Magistrates Court in the Country.
Just this month (October 2025), LSK has once again nominated him to be recognized as the Judicial Officer of the year in the upcoming Nairobi Legal Awards.
Festus is passionate about family and children’s matters. He uses his position to advance and Champion the rights of children. During his free time, he pays visits to Children’s homes and public primary schools within Nairobi. His attributes align well with the Vision of Chalan Foundation: Lighting hope.
